Why This Works

Green beans have a natural snap and crunch that the air fryer preserves while adding char. The high heat caramelizes the natural sugars in the beans, creating a slightly sweet, nutty flavor that plain steamed beans lack.

My Recipe Testing Notes

Green beans are one of the fastest vegetables to air fry. At 400°F for 8-10 minutes, they get slightly blistered and charred while staying crisp-tender inside. The key is not overcrowding — green beans need space for the air to circulate and char them rather than steam them.

Ingredients

1 lb Fresh green beans

Trimmed — fresh is much better than frozen here

1 tbsp Olive oil
3 cloves, minced Garlic
1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Black pepper
2 tbsp Parmesan cheese, grated
1 tsp Lemon zest
Pinch Red pepper flakes

Optional

Instructions

1

Trim green beans and pat dry. Toss with olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.

2

Spread in air fryer basket in a single layer — don't overcrowd.

3

Air fry at 400°F for 8-10 minutes, shaking the basket once halfway through.

4

Remove and immediately toss with parmesan, lemon zest, and red pepper flakes.

5

Serve immediately — green beans are best eaten right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen green beans?

Fresh green beans are strongly recommended — frozen beans release too much moisture and steam rather than char. If using frozen, add 3-4 minutes and expect a softer texture.

How do I keep green beans crispy?

Serve immediately after cooking. Green beans lose their crispiness quickly as they cool and release steam.

What other seasonings work?

Everything bagel seasoning, balsamic glaze (drizzle after cooking), soy sauce and sesame oil for an Asian twist, or simply garlic butter.
