Why This Works

The air fryer's rapid circulation of superheated air crisps the breading perfectly while melting the cheese inside. Unlike a conventional oven which often leaves them soggy, or deep frying which adds unnecessary oil, the air fryer gives you that restaurant-quality crunch in a fraction of the time.

My Recipe Testing Notes

I tested three different brands of frozen mozzarella sticks (Farm Rich, TGI Fridays, and a generic store brand) to find the perfect universal cooking time. Initially, I tried cooking them at 400°F. This was a mistake — the high heat caused the cheese to burst through the breading after just 4 minutes, leaving an empty shell. I found that dropping the temperature to 380°F for exactly 6 minutes is the sweet spot. The breading gets golden brown, and the cheese is perfectly gooey without leaking.

Ingredients

1 box (about 12 sticks) Frozen mozzarella sticks

Do not thaw — they must go in completely frozen

Light spritz Cooking spray

Optional — avocado oil spray works best. Never use aerosol PAM.

Instructions

1

Place the frozen mozzarella sticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Leave a little space between each stick so the air can circulate. Do not stack them.

2

Air fry at 380°F for 5 to 7 minutes. No need to preheat.

3

At the 5-minute mark, open the basket and check them. If you see any cheese starting to bubble out, remove them immediately.

4

Let them cool for 1-2 minutes before eating — the cheese inside will be molten hot! Serve with warm marinara sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

For this recipe, no. I tested it both ways, and starting with a cold air fryer actually helped prevent the cheese from exploding too quickly.

Can I stack them in the basket?

I would not recommend it. Stacking prevents even air circulation, and the sticks in the middle will come out soggy while the outside ones burn.

How do I reheat leftover mozzarella sticks?

Place them back in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes until warmed through and crispy again. Avoid the microwave, which will make them rubbery.
